Bringing the Holidays Into Your Home

The holiday season has a way of softening a home. Lights feel warmer, fabrics feel richer, and familiar routines take on a quieter kind of comfort. A  ribbon tied around on a favourite candle, the scent of pine drifting in from the entry, and the gentle glow of a tree in the corner remind us why this time of year matters.

When we talk with clients about seasonal styling, we always start from the same place: your home should still feel like your home. Holiday décor should enhance what you already love, not compete with it.

Below, I’m sharing a few of my go-to hacks to help you approach the season with ease, whether you’re decorating, renovating, or building your home with the holidays in mind.

1. Plan for the Holidays Long Before They Arrive

If you’re in the middle of a renovation or planning a new build, you can set yourself up for a calmer holiday season by thinking a few steps ahead.

Think about where your Christmas tree will sit, and how tall you want it to feel in the room. Adding a nearby floor outlet or a plug behind the tree prevents cords from stretching across the space. For exterior lighting, many homeowners are integrating lighting right into the roofline. If gemstone lighting isn’t in your plan, a simple switch tied to a roofline plug can still make outdoor decorating seamless.

Function matters just as much as beauty. Start by considering how many people you hope to host during the holidays. Clear circulation, the right island seating, and durable finishes make gathering easier when your kitchen and living spaces are full. And don’t forget the practical pieces we tend to overlook: a chimney that’s been cleaned, exterior lights that are working, and enough space around the tree so it feels intentional rather than squeezed in.

The goal is always the same: a home that adapts easily, without adding stress at an already full time of year.

2. Start With Simple, Timeless Layers

For many of us, holiday décor brings up images of themed pieces or bold colours. But a home can feel festive without leaning into heavy ornamentation. I like to approach holiday styling the same way I approach any room: start with quiet, timeless elements, then build gentle layers.

Think of textured throws, soft flannel, a velvet ribbon tied around a candle you already love, or a few winter greens tucked into a vase you use year-round. You can even shift the atmosphere with small, thoughtful changes like candles that smell like winter without being overpowering and hand towels that nod to the season without leaning into novelty. You don’t need a full overhaul, and you certainly don’t need a storage room of seasonal bins. A neutral palette creates space for these details to shine, and it’s far more forgiving if you enjoy experimenting with a different colour palette each year.

So ask yourself: what textures make your home feel warm as soon as the temperatures drop? Which pieces do you reach for again and again? Often, the most beautiful holiday styling is a natural extension of the pieces you reach for all year long.

3. Bring In Personalization Through Tradition

In my own home, holiday decorating is a full family affair. Every year, my kids choose a new ornament, and they never agree on a theme. One gravitates toward something sparkly, another picks the most unexpected thing on the shelf, and none of them match — which is exactly what I love. Our tree ends up looking more like a timeline than a design plan, filled with little reminders of who they were that year. They take charge of hanging everything themselves, and I don’t correct a single crooked branch or lopsided ribbon. Those imperfect touches are what make it feel like ours.

The imperfect touches are what make it ours, and they give the season its charm.

4. Support Your Home With Beautiful Local Pieces

Calgary has no shortage of lovely sources for holiday styling. If you’re working with live greenery, local florists do it best. I often find myself at Fleurish Flower Shop for fresh arrangements because their winter pieces last beautifully. For faux branches (think: pine, cedar, mixed greenery) Chintz & Company remains a reliable favourite.

Labode is wonderful for unique accents like velvet ribbons, antique bells, and understated décor that layers well with a neutral home. And if you need charming, well-priced finds, Steeling Home always has something special tucked into a corner.

When you support local shops, you also support the makers who bring so much warmth into our homes during the holidays.

A Home That Welcomes the Season and Your Life

The holidays ask our homes to do a little more, but they don’t need to feel complicated. When you layer in thoughtful touches, like a shift in texture, a hint of greenery, pieces that feel seasonal yet true to your style, the season settles in naturally. And if you’re renovating or building, a few smart decisions can make this time of year easier and more enjoyable for years to come. The goal is never perfection. It’s creating a home that feels warm, welcoming, and ready to hold the moments that matter.

If you’re planning a renovation or new build and want your home to support the holidays with ease, we’re here to help you think through those details from the start.
